Preorders, and posters, and door hangers ... OH MY!

Making books is an act of bending time. You come up with the thing, sometimes it comes together in a flash, and sometimes it takes years. Then you sell the thing, officially make the thing, and then wait years. It feels like forever and then you blink and it’s just a couple months away to see it on bookshelves and in the hands of young readers.

In 2020 when the world shut down, our youngest kid, Louise, was four. During lockdown, she was very curious about what everyone else was up to. What’s Nana doing right now? And are the cousins at their house? Are my teachers at preschool still? Are my friends at their houses? We saw her view of the world expand tenfold. Suddenly things were happening where she wasn’t, which led to a million other questions. There was one at bedtime that struck a chord with me.

What are the animals doing when we’re asleep?

I sat down the next day and wrote the entire first draft for While You’re Asleep in one fell swoop. Things were flipped and shifted and reordered, many of the lines are still in tact. It comes out March 26. In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing some art and behind the scenes sorts of things, as well as some info on book events. Today, I’ve got some pre-order fun to share.

(I don’t always take a photo shoot with my proofs. My friend Lori M Gottschling is a photographer and came to my studio and took a billion gorgeous photos I’m so happy to have. I’ll share more soon with a studio tour.)
